SOME REVIEWS:

Pitchfork review: 'Summer Cats “Hush Puppy” [unsigned; 2006]

I'm actually not sure unsigned Australian band Summer Cats' "Hush Puppy" has much to do with either cats or dogs, but it's way better than goldfish. Played by three boys and three girls, the song's fizzy guitars, dreamy keyboards, and straight-ahead drums melt together in a happy lo-fi haze that makes it hard to pick out instruments. "Get lost," singer Scott Brewer suggests. Thankfully, that's much easier.

"Hush Puppy" started circulating on indie-pop mailing lists in mid-November, but so far only a pair of Spanish-language blogs (and lucky Victoria concertgoers) seem to have caught on. That, like Brewer's maturing narrator, could change, as new listeners discover the band's sound: a messy melange with hints of countrymen the Go-Betweens as well as the post-C86 bands. As for Brewer, he sounds almost giddy in his lovesickness. "Disappointment turns to laughter now," he sings. It's almost summer Down Under, and I'm a cat person.
